Poor Man's Cupboard

Poormanscupboard

The contemporary painted cabinets - illustrator Johan Hörberg and carpenter Johan Käck.

Poor Man's Cupboard" How do we take care of what we have? How do we create things that last a long time? Can tradition and contemporary meet through the development of new things and expressions? In this collaboration between the illustrator Johan Hörberg and the carpenter Johan Käck, not only two disciplines meet but also two expressions; the contemporary and the traditional. Present and past. Perhaps the products of the future are an enhancement of the simple – perhaps even an enhancement of the old? Perhaps the future requires that they are. The starting point for the collaboration is the painted wall cabinets that have a strong tradition in many parts of the country. Not least in Hälsingland and Gästrikland where Johan and Johan grew up. The cabinets could sometimes be very simple, other times more elaborate. Regardless, the painting became a way to elevate the status of the cabinets. Even today, several hundred-year-old painted cabinets are preserved and they are sold at high prices at auction houses. Can we create a cabinet that lasts for hundreds of years? That still interprets our time? Our hands believe they can.
