This is not trash! Afterlife of Leftovers

An exhibition inviting us to handle with care what we discard

Drawing from the everyday practices of care that have long been a part of many cultures, in this exhibition we attend with care to the materials we discard as waste. Reflecting on the disposable everyday with its single use plastics and throw away cups, disguised as acceptable habits of contemporary urban life under the promise of recycling, we instead imagine alternative afterlives as we attempt to extend the lifespan of materials.

Leftovers is an exhibition showcasing a series of objects designed and made out of leftover materials – scraps, deadstocks, expired items. Original one of a kind designed objects / artworks and stationery items, handmade with care attending to the graphical, textural, and technical qualities of what was once seen as expired or trash will be exhibited in their new lives showcasing their newfound values.

This exhibition starts from the idea that to care is to be accountable for the choices one makes in the entangled relations of eco-social ecosystems one inhabits. To care is to act, to maintain, to love and respect. Care is laborious. Asking how we might care for the planet, people, practices, things, materials, the exhibition draws attention to what artistic practices might bring to caring for the vast amounts of materials we discard as waste despite the value and potentials they hold.

Previous editions of these works were site-specific in the sense that we worked with expired materials from local cultural institutions in Copenhagen’s design and art museums, which made them extremely unique. So, in this edition, we will work with the leftover or expired printed materials from Malmö's cultural scene and make design objects, artworks, and stationery items. It will be possible to purchase the items.
