The Upcycled Family Drinks Coffee Together

An Installation about Re-design

The Upcycled Family meet up for coffee. Like all good families, they meet regularly to enjoy good food and to come together as a group.

99% of this installation is upcycled. The chairs were old and worn. Instead of buying new chairs, I tried to make the old ones more interesting by using some of my stash of always-inspiring fabric and paper scraps. The cushion-cover is a sheet I have hand-dyed.

I found the wooden fruit crate lying on the gound outside of a greengrocer's. The table, with room for storage inside, is a former moving box wallpapered with pages from an old yardsale bible. The teacups and mugs were bought in secondhand stores. The cake stand came from a neighbor who was going to throw it away. The recycled glass jars contain recycled flowers. The cardboard labels are cut out of a cereal box.

If we are going to reach our sustainability goals, it is not just the big companies who have to make changes, individuals are going to have to do more too.

It would be nice if I could inspire others as well as myself to spend less time and energy on buying new things and more on upcycling and re-design, and on taking better care of our beautiful planet, because it is the only one we have.
