The Monument of Production

Monumentet snett framifrån

The sky's the limit: A reminder of the consequences of consumption.

The Monument of Production is a clothing and a piece of furniture. A wooden frame holds up a large fabric that wraps the frame and creates a monumental shape. Inside, you can sit in a woven seat and gaze upwards in silence. The Monument is almost 3 meters high and was created at the Lund School of Architecture.

The project was created to highlight the enormous surplus produced in the clothing industry. All the textiles used were either dumpstered or donated from second-hand shops. These were discarded clothes not in fashion when they were handed in, were slightly worn at the edges or stained, or simply because the shops had received too much clothes. This surplus has instead been transformed into a monument that reminds us of the surplus but also serves as a symbolic experience of denial.

Inside the monument, you can sit down and shut out reality in the silent interior. The only contact is upwards, reflecting the thought that we can keep producing as much as we do now and only aim upwards: The sky's the limit.
