Chainsaw and scalpel shape evocative woodcraft
The exhibition Dialogue at Galleri S:t Gertrud presents works by Jonatan Appelfeldt and Carl Martinson. Their common denominator is wood and a care and respect for the material. Together they offer visitors an insight into the creative process and the different outcomes of working with a chainsaw and scalpel respectively. The exhibition is organised by the Swedish Crafts Centre in collaboration with Konstfrämjandet Skåne.
Jonatan Appelfeldt and Carl Martinson work in wood and have shared a workshop and studio for several years. They share the same care and respect for the material and its characteristics, but use very different craft techniques. From a block of wood, Appelfeldt carves sculptures with a chainsaw and angle grinder, and then creates the textured surface by applying layers of sand and paint. Martinson allows the natural pattern variation of wood to become part of the image-making process as he assembles his intarsia motifs with thin veneer cut with a scalpel and glued to a wooden board. Despite the different approaches there are similarities in both form and expression.
This exhibition shows how a collection of unique wooden sculptures and furniture, created using two completely different craft techniques, comes into being. The visitor is invited into the artists' universe of forms and abstract landscapes, in both individual objects and collaborative works.
