Slysloyd

Slyslöjd process

Undesirable desirable glass

In this project, the potential of a neglected material from nature is investigated. A material that is often mentioned in a negative context and that can create frustration within the forestry industry. Forests, both in rural areas and in urban areas, are important for both people and animals, and most people have positive associations with them. However, the category of material found in forests called brushwood, or in Swedish more known as sly, is not valued very highly by the municipality, forest and land owners.

Slysloyd is an experimental project where fresh sly is used to create and shape objects in glass. The sly is thinned from places where it would have been discarded and considered undesirable and ugly. The moulds are created to link back to the dense and vertical vegetation of the sly, and also a nod to the historical use of wooden blow moulds. The moulds and glass objects are hand-made and mouth-blown where no one is the same, manufactured in Malmö and Småland, Sweden. From an unwanted material, a new desired material has been created.
