Colourful garments made with innovative zero-waste pattern cutting.
Garments that were made in the past wasted less fabric. They had a more pragmatic and thoughtful approach to the creation of clothes as fabric was more expensive and woven by hand. Ivan has studied historical pattern cutting from 3000 years ago until today to take inspiration from their methods and develop new patterns that allows for the creation of garments where the entire fabric is used in the process. This technique generates no fabric waste because the patterns are designed with the measurements of the fabric in mind and the layplan of the patterns is created like a perfect puzzle with synergetic pattern pieces that all have a purpose in the garment. This method is called zero-waste pattern cutting and is a very uncharted territory in modern fashion design.
The fashion designer Ivan Svanberg has made it his mission to invent zero-waste patterns for all different types of garments that exist, in hope that this will lead to smarter design solutions in the fashion industry. This exhibition shows a variety of garments that have been made so far with this method. The garments are imbued with form and colour through luxurious and comfortable fabrics and textile prints inspired by Scanian culture and history.
Feel free to touch and try on the clothes! Be observant and see if you can find the selvedge of the fabric on the garment itself, as this is often an indication that the very outer edge of the fabric has been used in the making process.
