An installation exploring the soul of Malmö
Each city has its unique identity shaped through its architecture, spaces, artifacts as well as how its human and nonhuman residents and visitors make sense and remakes these through ongoing interactions. As cities extend in time from pasts to present to futures, it becomes important to reflect: what needs to be preserved, encouraged, let to thrive, and what needs to be transformed?
In a series called “Soul of City”, we have been exploring the soul of cities starting with Copenhagen, and expanding to Roskilde, Aarhus, Berlin, Umeå, and Malmö from the situated experience as immigrants and visitors. As initially strangers to these cities, our experiences and observations have been fresh allowing us to notice what usually gets taken for granted. These fresh takes have often echoed across the long-time residents as well as new ones. “This made me appreciate my city more”, we were often told.
In this exhibition, we focus on Malmö and showcase our reflections on our experiences and observations of Malmö through a series of art prints, stationery, and accessories. What makes Malmö special and home to many, and a cosy city to explore to others, and a dream home to aspirers? Which locations have been special? What echoes across? As we let our voice spread, we also listen to the public and ask what Malmö is to them.
