Tufted rugs from a basement in Malmö

Ylvasara is a Malmö-based artist who primarily uses tufting as her technique.

She fell in love with the technique because she likes the possibilities to work both quickly and in a large format. Tufting is a very versatile technique and it is not just art you can look at, it can be a bag, a cushion or wine-chlothes. Something useful with a soft touch.

You can have the tufted rug on the wall or on the floor and it can change the acoustics and the ambiance of an entire room.

Ylvasara's art is often themed around nature, plants and people. Her background in graphic arts echoes in her colors and compositions. The shape, themes and sizes of her artworks vary from large rugs to small wall hangings and chairs covers.

Tufting is a technique where the yarn is threaded into a tool then punches the yarn into a stretched canvas. This results in loops that the tool can either cut or leave as loops. The technique is very free in its form and is often described as painting with yarn.

Part of the exhibition Off Pitch Echoes with:

Anna Celander - Works with lines and the traces of time in a constant dialogue.
Helle Robertson / ROBERTSON ReDESIGN - Turns obsolete information and dated
strategies into conceptual objects.
Jenny Holmlund - Reuses forgotten paintings to create new works.

An echo travels through the room, bounces, breaks, changes. The exhibition Off
Pitch Echoes is an investigation of this idea and how small shifts, distortions and
dissonances give rise to new expressions.

Artist talk Thursday 17:30. Welcome!
