Stories on stories
What happens to the characters in a book that is forgotten? Jenny Holmlund couldn't let go of that question.
After digging through archives for children's books from the turn of the last century, Jenny wanted to express her ideas in a way that showed respect for the forgotten stories. By reusing old oil paintings, she can tell a new story on the back of an old one. In addition to the environmental aspect, there is also an aesthetic value in something that has already had a life – the signs of aging in the worn wooden frames and the stained linen.
"I started to paint myself to an answer. Fleeting visions that take days and sometimes weeks to nail down onto the canvas. I don't know why they don't leave me alone... or if it's the other way around"
Inspired by the style of the of the late 19th century patterns, Jenny also shows fabric in which the animals she paints are incorporated.
"Stories on stories" is an interpretation of what remains when a story is forgotten. The echo of it. The characters who continue to live their lives free from the gaze of the author and the readers.
Part of the exhibition Off Pitch Echoes together with:
Helle Robertson/ROBERTSON ReDESIGN - From dated strategies to conceptual interior objects.
Ylvasara - Textile art in the form of tufted rugs and wall hangings.
Anna Celander - Works with lines and the traces of time in a constant dialogue.
An echo travels through the room, bounces, breaks, changes. The exhibition Off Pitch Echoes is an investigation of this idea and how small shifts, distortions and dissonances give rise to new expressions.
Opening 5-7 PM Thursday 22/5. Short artist talk with all participants 17.30.
