The 2025 Bruno Mathsson Design Residency recipient
Bruno Mathsson Design Residency offers an internationally active designer time for research, development, networking, and focus in a stimulating architectural environment. The residency has been run by Region Jönköping County and Vandalorum since 2023. This year’s recipient is Danish furniture designer Maria Bruun.
During the residency, the designer is offered the opportunity to live and work for one month in a house designed by the influential architect and furniture designer Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988). The house, built in 1955, is located in Mathsson’s hometown of Värnamo in Småland and was originally commissioned by Sven Lundh (founder of Källemo and initiator of Vandalorum). The designer is also invited to visit the extensive furniture and manufacturing industry in the Jönköping region, based on their interests and preferences. In addition, the residency includes a tour of Bruno Mathsson’s private home and the Mathsson Center, as well as the opportunity to give a public lecture at Vandalorum.
In 2025, the residency is awarded to Danish furniture designer Maria Bruun, based in Copenhagen. In recent years, she has received Denmark’s two most prestigious design awards: the Wegner Prize (2022) and the Finn Juhl Prize (2021). She has gained international recognition for her innovative and sculptural designs, showcasing a deep understanding of the natural properties of wood—exemplified by the acclaimed Pioneer stool and Islets table for Fredericia.
The Bruno Mathsson Design Residency is run by Region Jönköping County and the art and design museum Vandalorum, with support from IASPIS/The Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s international program for visual and applied artists, Region Jönköping County, and Värnamo Municipality, in collaboration with entrepreneur and furniture collector Johan Sjöberg, Bruno Mathsson International, and the Karin and Bruno Mathsson Foundation. The 2024 resident was American designer Stephen Burks.
