New interpretations of textile patterns inspired by historic photographies
That trends move in cycles is not a new observation. Wether we are talking about clothes, hairstyles, furniture, art or pretty much anything else. Different times have different dominating expressions which are used as both inspiration and counter parts when new expressions evolve and takes shape, a constant process as time moves and the world changes.
During 2024 my grandma Sonja passed away, at the age of 97. During her life she experienced many different changes, styles, political movements and innovations that I can only try to imagine. One of the things she left behind is a large collection of photographies. They are like quick glimpses of a world that I have not had the opportunity to experience but that has shaped her strongly. I can also notice its effect in my mother and to some extent in me. Sonja was a stylish woman who minded how she was perceived, both regarding manners and looks. The collection of photographies therefore contain a rich material for me to be inspired by as a creator.
For Southern Sweden Design Days 2025 I want to create an exhibition where I show my own interpretations of textile patterns inspired by the photographies mentioned. The kind of patterns we create today are either inspired by earlier versions or created from a need to produce something different. In both cases our historical choices connected to design are reoccurring and an important part of the process.
