On the 19th–22nd of May 2022, the second edition of Southern Sweden Design Days will take place – a new international design event in Malmö organised by Form/Design Center. The event that highlights and builds knowledge about design – focusing on sustainability, collaboration, development and innovation. During four days, a platform is created showcasing a full range of design disciplines and the city is filled with exhibitions, seminars, workshops, networking events and festivities in a variety of places.

– The goal is to be an inclusive, exploratory and experimental event, says Dorte Bo Bojesen, CEO of Form/Design Center. The venture is part of our ongoing work to strengthen and highlight the cultural and creative industries. Through Southern Sweden Design Days, we want to promote collaboration, establish contact points for knowledge development, experience exchange and network building – locally, nationally and internationally.

Southern Sweden Design Days is open to visitors of all ages and is aimed at a broad public as well as people who have a specific design-interest and professional visitors. The participants are independent designers, studios, offices and collectives, producers and companies active in the field of design, educational and cultural institutions as well as industry organizations and associations.

Focus on meetings and networking

–The premiere of Southern Sweden Design Days 2021 was expanded during the pandemic to a major digital venture. We look forward to being able to carry out the extensive physical event in 2022 with a focus on meetings and networking, which was the ambition from the beginning. Great emphasis will be placed on opportunities for interaction and social and business networking, says Terese Alstin, who together with Ann Isler forms the project management duo behind Southern Sweden Design Days.

– Lokstallarna in Kirseberg will serve as a “Main location” and will function as a connection point and a venue for the grand opening, various exhibitions and a studio with seminars and panel discussions in front of a live audience, says Ann Isler. Successful formats from the 2021 edition will remain, such as Instagram Live where visitors can dive into the participants’ creative environments as they broadcast live from their studios.

Theme 2022

The focus on meetings and interaction is also reflected in 2022’s theme: "PROXIMITY” - nearness in space, time, or relationship. The theme calls for interpretations reflecting on the notion of being close – the connection between people, cities, countries, species, professions, etc. Proximity can include several dimensions. To produce and consume locally – to use the assets and resources that are close by to build a sustainable future. At the same time, be globally interconnected between continents, countries, and cities. To feel kinship with people all over the world and consider how closely we all are connected to each other.

The premiere in May 2021

The first edition of Southern Sweden Design Days was carried out in May 2021, after being postponed twice due to the pandemic. To make Southern Sweden Design Days available both nationally and internationally, the premiere of the event had a digital focus. The digital content included everything from lectures, panel discussions and workshops, to project films, fashion shows and virtual exhibitions. Despite the pandemic, physical activities were also held during the event in various locations in Malmö in a safely adapted way.

In total, about 200 program activities were arranged during Southern Sweden Design Days 2021 and more than 280 designers participated. Around 80 physical activities were arranged at over 50 different locations across the city, which resulted in approximately 11,400 visits to Southern Sweden Design Day's physical program activities during all event days.
